The kind folks at Jotta.com have just launched a competition in conjunction with Wacom Bamboo, and are on the hunt for drawn definitions of ‘Style’. They asked to interview me on my own opinions of the definition of style, especially within fashion illustration.

How would you describe your style of fashion illustration?
Quite loose and fluid, although I do like to represent the clothes themselves as honestly as possible. I like to stretch proportions, and show dynamics and movement as much as possible, usually through use of ink and watercolour. I prefer things not too polished; if you can still see pencil marks then it gives the piece a raw edge.How does one depict style through illustration?
I think choice of medium is very important. Even just simple decisions such as what colours to restrict yourself to can be key. The simple switch between hand-drawn or more digital methods can create a huge style change too. It’s important to always be true to the original idea and themes that come from the Collection you are illustrating; for example if a collection is based around hard tailoring, severe structures, and industrial elements, it doesn’t make sense to illustrate it using watercolours and shaky lines. It’s all about considering the overall feeling of the collection and how to represent it best.
