This is awesomely exciting: I was contacted recently by the lovely people at Cleo Magazine, in Australia, who really like my recipe illustrations and wanted me to produce some more for a feature in the September issue! Amazing!
So I allowed them to reproduce two of my old ones, and did two new ones for them as well, which I want to post up here:
This recipe is one from my mum – she always makes this at BBQs and get-togethers etc and it’s so amazing (as the title suggests), and pretty easy too. The feta and the capers make it stand out against shop-bought couscous, it’s perfect for summer days!
I’ve made this a few times and it is easy – the ready made cake mix is a bit of a cheat so sometimes I do make it from scratch. Using the orange juice instead of water is genius and they taste amazing – especially the next day when the orange zest has had time to sink into the icing and give it flavour.
Nom nom nom.
So these illustrations will be in the September issue of Cleo, out in August. If (like me) you don’t live in Australia then you won’t be able to get your hands on a copy, but I have some friends in Oz who hopefully can send me it!
This is the first time my work has been published onto actual physical paper so I’m really happy. It’s just on an exposure basis but who knows what could come from this? Good times! Thanks Australia, very random but cool!

Hi Rachel, I live in Australia and received my Cleo subscription yesterday. I just wanted to say I loved your article, your illustrations are amazing. I love how your recipies look so easy to follow and how you’ve drawn pictures for each step. I can’t wait to try your cous cous recipie.
I wish you all the best with getting your book published. I’d definitely buy it!
P.S I’m glad you used metric measurements :)

Thanks so much for your comment; I’ve sent you a quick email but I’ll also reply here! So happy you like my illustrations, didn’t realise it had already been published! :D
Yeah it’s all about metric…we use that in the UK (can’t be doing with these ‘Cup’ measurements!!) so it’s just what I’m used to :)
Definitely try the cous cous one, its pretty easy and sooo tasty. Always a winner with guests, it looks way more fancy than it actually is!
Getting the book published would be amazing… one step at a time. Who knows! Thanks again xxx

Hello Rachel, loved your piece on the Glasgow Harvest/twEATs project. I’m back in Oz at the moment for a visit and will definitely run out and buy the Sept Cleo before it’s off the shelf. Are you getting one sent out to you? Just yell if you need one (I’m based in Glasgow in real life).
Good luck with the twEATs submission!

Thanks a lot! I loved doing it, food illustration is my favourite, you get to make it, illustrate it AND eat it, win win! Well, the magazine itself won’t send one out to me but I do have some friends in Oz that have said will buy it for me, but not entirely sure how reliable they will be, they’ve got a full time business and 4 young kids!! So I’m not high on priority lol. According to Cleo website the mag is on general release in 11 days, so if you’re still there then see if it’s around? It’s got Gwen Stefani on the cover. Maybe it’s already out…
So if you do see it then it would be awesome to grab me a copy if that’s ok? If its not out while you’re there then no worries :)
xx
